Piaggio Aerospace to Open Historic Archive to the Public

Piaggio Aerospace has signed a five-year agreement with the General Directorate of Archives of Italy's Ministry of Culture to protect and promote the historical archive of Rinaldo Piaggio Aeronautical and Mechanical Industries and ensure that this important part of Italy's industrial and aeronautical heritage is preserved for future generations.

The agreement was signed at the San Michele a Ripa Monumental Complex in Rome by Antonio Tarasco, Director-General of Archives at the Ministry of Culture, and Francesco Cristian Toninelli, CEO of Piaggio Aerospace, in the presence of Elif Çomoğlu Ülgen, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Italy.

Piaggio Aerospace’s archive preserves over a century of Italian industrial and technological innovation. Its extensive collections of historical drawings, photographs, and aerodynamic models illustrate the evolution of Piaggio’s engineering expertise and aeronautical heritage.

Under the agreement, Piaggio Aerospace will contribute to the preservation and accessibility of this historic collection through the digitization of historical archives, the creation of replicas of iconic aircraft models, and the establishment of a permanent museum at the company’s headquarters in Villanova d'Albenga. Additional exhibitions in Italy will further broaden public access to the company’s history and its contribution to aviation and industrial innovation.

Antonio Tarasco, Director-General of Archives at the Ministry of Culture, said: ''With this agreement, we are taking an important step towards safeguarding and promoting Italy’s industrial heritage. This achievement recognizes the commitment of the General Directorate of Archives and the institutional collaboration aimed at making this extraordinary heritage increasingly accessible. A concrete example of synergy between the public and private sectors, which strengthens the cultural dialogue between Italy and Türkiye and demonstrates how historical memory can become an opportunity for cooperation and innovation.''

''This is an agreement I personally care a lot about,'' said Haluk Bayraktar, Chairman of Piaggio Aerospace and CEO of Baykar. ''In the company's archives, we have wooden wind-tunnel models and original drawings that go back generations. With this agreement, we are ensuring that this collection is preserved, remains here in Villanova d’Albenga, and becomes accessible to the public. These objects are part of this valley’s history, and they will stay here for future generations to discover and appreciate.''

Through this partnership, Baykar reaffirms its commitment to preserving the legacy of Piaggio's industrial and aeronautical heritage and connecting its rich history with future generations.
